UPCOMING PROGRAMS:
- Attention!!! We are starting a new Homemaker Recipe Club. If you love cooking and trying new recipes, this club is for you! We will not meet in person, all you have to do is call to be added to our list! Once we have your contact information, you will receive 3 new recipes each month in the mail! We encourage you to try these at home with your family, take pictures and let us know what you think! If you are not already a paid Homemaker, dues are $12.00 annually. - February is Kentucky Lamb Month! Let’s spend the month celebrating delicious, healthy lamb, as well as the state's sheep industry. There will be a Sheep/Goat Educational Workshop & Dinner on Feb. 22nd in McKee, KY. Please contact the Jackson County Extension Office at 606-287-7693 for more information.
- Join us for the 6th Season of the Silvopasture Webinar Series! This series runs every Tuesday until March 5th. Silvopasture: Managing Your Woodlands & Livestock in a New-Old Way. The purpose of the Woodland Stewards program is to empower woodland owners to promote environmental and forest health through increased awareness, experience and access to resources. This educational program was developed by a collaborative team of forestry Extension personnel to serve a multi-state audience.
- KY Maple Days are coming up on Feb. 3rd & 17th. Join us as we celebrate maple syrup production in KY. Learn how it is made and where you can find it during the 2024 Kentucky Maple Days! Visit https://ky-maplesyrup.ca.uky.edu/ to learn more.
- There will be a 4-H Council Meeting on February 6th at 11:30 via Zoom. A link will be sent a few days before the meeting. Please let Alissa know if you will be able to join by February 2nd!
- Would you like to learn how to make beautiful greeting cards? Join our Homemaker Card Making Club! We meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 1:00 p.m. at the Clay County Extension Office. We always welcome new members. If you’re not already a Homemaker member, dues are $12 annually. Our next meeting will be February 13th!
- The National Farm Machinery Show will be held at the KY Expo Center in Louisville, KY on Feb 14-17th. This show offers the most complete selection of cutting-edge agricultural products, equipment, and services available in the farming industry. Business professionals from around the world gain knowledge and hands-on access to various technological advancements needed for the upcoming farming season during the four-day show.
- Join us for the Importance of Pollinators on February 15th at 6:00 p.m. at the Clay County Extension Office. This month's topic will be Planning for Pollinator Gardens! We will be having a potluck dinner so bring your favorite dish!
- The 7th Annual Eastern Kentucky Farmer Conference is coming to Morehead Conference Center on February 16-17, 2024. This event will host nearly 150 participants, featuring farmers and technical assistance providers presenting on topics including high tunnels, livestock, farm funding, and marketing. In addition, a veteran farmer meetup hosted by the Kentucky Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (KCARD) will be Friday, as well as a special entertainment event after dinner. Over 20 resource providers that address loan and grant funding, conservation, business planning, and production needs will be present to work with farmers and assist them as they grow their farm businesses. Registration for the 2024 Eastern Kentucky Farmer Conference ends January 31st. Registration includes dinner on Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Local farmers and producers will be priority when sourcing for meals.
- The Pins & Needles Homemaker Club meets the 3rd Saturday of every month at 10:00 a.m. at the EXCEL building beside McDonalds. This club always welcomes new members! Bring your materials and join them with your sewing projects. Don’t know how to sew, no problem...they will teach you! If you’re not already a homemaker member, dues are $12 annually. Call 598-2789 for more information. Our next meeting will be February 17th!
- Strategies to Reduce Fertilizer Use on Eastern KY Cattle Farms will be on February 19, 2024, at 5:30 PM at the EXCEL building, 86 Muddy Gap Rd, Manchester, KY 40962. Topics include: Using Legumes to get the Nitrogen Cycle Working, Feeding Hay to Recycle Nutrients, Clipping Weeds to Enhance Fertility, Having an Appropriate Stocking Rate and Implementing Basic Rotational Grazing without Perfect Infrastructure. The guest speaker will be Dr. Greg Halich, Associate Extension Professor with the Department of Agriculture Economics at the University of Kentucky. Please call 598-2789 to register. Other locations and dates to attend include: February 20th – Knott County Extension at 149 Parks Rd, Hindman, KY 41822, February 21st – Lee County Extension at 259 Industrial Park Rd, Beattyville, KY 41311 and February 22nd – Morehead State University Farm at 25 MSU Farm Rd, Morehead, KY 40351. All programs start at 5:30 pm. Please contact your local Extension Office to register.
- Do you enjoy baking or want to learn more about cooking? The 4-H Cooking Club will meet on February 19th at 4:00 p.m. at the Clay County Extension Office. Join us as we learn kitchen tips and safety and create delicious dishes! Limited spots are available, and you must call to register. FREE but you must be 9-18 years of age to participate.
- Do you love being creative or looking to make new friends? The 4-H Art Club will meet on February 20th at 4:00 pm at the Clay County Extension Office. You must call 598-2789 to register. This program is free and open to ages 9-18.
- There will be a Clay County Beekeepers Meeting on February 22nd at 6:00 pm at the EXCEL Building. We will be having a potluck dinner so bring your favorite dish!
- Join us for 4-H Homeschool Club on February 26th at 1:00 pm at the Clay County Extension Office. We will cover a variety of topics! You must be homeschooled to participate. Open to ages 9-18, and you must call 598-2789 to register.
- Join us for our next Clay County Cattlemen’s Association Meeting on March 12th at 6:00 p.m. at the EXCEL building. Please call 598-2789 to register to ensure we have an accurate head count for food.
- 4H Summit: March 21-23If you are attending this year’s event, please mark your calendars for March 21st-23rd! This event will take place at Lake Cumberland 4-H Camp Center. Transportation arrangements will be sent in the mail.
- April 30: 4H Communication Day
- Mark your calendars for 4-H Summer Camp July 30th-August 2nd. Join us for a few days of activities, programs and much more. You must have completed 3rd grade, or you must be 9-14 years of age to attend camp as a camper. Ages 15-18 can serve as counselors in training or teen counselors at camp! This is a great opportunity to receive community service hours! Applications will be available March 25th! You can receive an application on our website or pick-up at the Clay County Extension Office. If you attended camp last year, you will receive an application in the mail!
