Family and Consumer Sciences: The goal of the Family & Consumer Sciences Program is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families.  We address the challenges of critical issues affecting people's daily lives in a changing environment.  Programs focus on economic, social and physical well-being of our clients.  We strengthen personal and family relationships, encourage healthful choices, and identify resources to extend income.

PROGRAMS

  • Plate It Up Cooking School will be held August 16th at 6:00 pm at the Extension Office.  We will be preparing two Plate It Up recipes for your enjoyment.  Fruits and vegetables in the recipes can be raised in Kentucky gardens.  Please call Lora at 598-2789 to register for an evening of food preparation.  This program is free and open to the public.
  • Hazel Jackson will be here for our first homemaker leader training lesson of the 2018-19 year “Let’s Learn How to Applique”.  The lesson will be held August 21st at 10:00 am at the Extension Office.  This program is free and open to the public, but you must call 598-2789 and register.
  • It’s All About the Bread is on August 23rd at 6:00 pm at the Extension Office.  We will be learning how to make zucchini bread.  You planted several hills of summer squash and now have more zucchini than you can prepare.  What can you do?  Make zucchini bread or other recipes.  Come enjoy an evening of preparing bread.
  • Blue To You is scheduled for August 24th at 10:00 am at the Extension Office.  Blue to You is a depression awareness program to give faces to depression, symptoms, co-existing illnesses, causes, treatments, and how different people experience depression.  With the recent suicides of two well-known celebrities that were depressed, there are more people who may be experiencing depression than what we know.  Come learn about this disease that no one wants to talk about.  Free and open to the public, but please call 598-2789 to register.
  • The Homemaker Council Meeting and Officer Training is August 27th at 5:00 pm at the Extension Office.  All homemaker officers are encouraged to attend.  We will hand out material for your officer position.  Call 598-2789 and let Lora know that you will be attending for food purposes.
  • Clay County Homemakers Photography Show will be August 29th - August 31st at the Clay County Extension Office.  Enter pictures on Wednesday, August 29th from 2-6:00 pm.  The photographs will be on display and open for viewing to the public on Thursday, August 30th from 12-4:00 pm and Friday, August 31st from 11 am - 3 pm. Entry fee is $5 per picture.  Categories include youth, regular and professional, color and black and white. Youth is under the age of 16.  Smallest size is 5x7 and largest size is 16x20.  You can bring easel for display.  One entry per person, per category.  1/2 money will be given to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund with the University of Kentucky Hospital and 1/2 will be used to conduct programs for Clay County Homemakers.  Photographs need to be the original work of person entering the photograph and be taken in the last two years.  1st and 2nd place ribbons will be given in each category.  1st place Best of Show receives $15 and 2nd place Best of Show receives $10 in both regular and youth, excludes professional.  For more information and a list of the categories, call 598-2789.


Don’t forget the Facebook “Small Steps to Health & Wealth” program.  It has been well documented that, when people monitor their behavior and measure how they are doing, they are often inspired to do better and achieve positive results. These posts are on our Clay County Extension Office Facebook page. 

You can also participate in two additional programs:

1) The Clay County Cooperative Extension Service is launching an online Small Steps to Health and Wealth™ (SSHW) Challenge. This free 5 month program is designed to help you improve both your health and personal finance behaviors.  To sign up for the SSHW Challenge, follow the SSHW Online Challenge link available on the National Steps to Health and Wealth™ Challenge Web site at http://rutgers.ancc.net/. Register an account by creating a user name and password, and download the simple one-page user’s guide with instructions on how to enter a challenge.  Enroll in the challenge titled Clay County KY Small Steps to Health and Wealth Challenge.” If you have problems registering or additional questions please call our office.

2) The other program you can participate in is Money Habitudes; a one-time program that will allow you to figure out what influences you to spend your money by answering a series of questions.  You need to call our office at 598-2789 and give us your e-mail address to participate in this program.
